Smartphones function pretty much the same as existing mobile phones. They are a combination of mobile and PDAs. One big difference is that they can also access custom-designed content such as Java for Mobile Devices (J2ME) so it gives fast, relatively cheap access to a range of business friendly applications, such as desktop publishing, word processing, accounting spreadsheets etc.

So smartphones offer, in effect, the mobility of a handset along with the multifunctionality of a PDA.
